Gözde Atalay (TUR): NOMAD

What happens when a Turkish immigrant, Ayşe, meets policeman Eric and the Paper Creature, an absurd embodiment of bureaucracy?

NOMAD is a biographic physical theatre performance centred in the experiences of Ayşe, a Turkish female immigrant in Europe.

Tender and funny, it explores migration through the point of view of three characters – Ayşe, the heroine, and two institutional monsters, Eric (policeman/immigration officer) and the Paper Creature (and absurd embodiment of bureaucracy).

Whether work, marriage or refuge is the reason for migration, the period of waiting administrative limbo – which can last years – and the bureaucratic encounters that become the shared experience of all migrants.

Based in Gözde’s own journey as an immigrant in Europe.

Created and performed by Gözde Atalay
Directed by Carolina Ortega
Music by Periklis Liakakis
Produced by TUCAN RIOT & Mimosa Theatre Co.

Gözde Atalay as an artist:

“My work as an artist is at times mad in a creative feeling. It is often funny and playful. Tender and sensual. Intense and precise. It is foolish but also mystic and spiritual. It brings up the state of exploring the different layers of my body. Personal, cultural and collective.

My individuation process finds me floating inside a creative triangle. My work as a performer, a director and a physical theatre facilitator.

I am a multi-origin Turkish born artist. Currently based in Athens Greece, and collaborating in a number of international projects in various countries. Among others, Germany, France, England, Turkey and Russia.”
